STUCK ON VHS: Watched (1974)

Many Sundays throughout the year we will be highlighting a few titles that are considered to be "stuck" on VHS, with no physical releases since the format (discounting VHS transfers on DVDs, etc.) for various reasons, i.e. legal ownership disputes, music licensing issues, or perhaps just perceived lack of interest.

A lost relic of druggie cinema, WATCHED is as erratic and bonkers as it is incomprehensible. Lots of great footage of past-its-prime 70s Haight-Ashbury, with a soundtrack from 1970s jazz-fusion band Weather Report and songs from Canadian singer Bob Carpenter surrounding a balls-to-the-wall performance from Keach.

From the back of the box:

"What happens when the law breaks a man?

Critics at the Atlanta Film Festival called WATCHED "a fantastic cocaine nightmare" and Stacy Keach's "finest performance."

Following his critically acclaimed performance in BUTTERFLY, KEACH portrays Mike Mandell, a lawyer and former U.S. attorney who suffers a mental breakdown and subsequently murders a narcotics agent. After the incident, he is subjected to massive doses of government surveillance. Not only are his public actions recorded, but also his most secret fantasies... including his private view of himself as Sonny Monaco, a master mobster who sports a pinstriped suit, a carnation, sunglasses and a gun.

With nowhere to hide, Mike Mandell is taped, filmed, bugged, WATCHED - until he strikes out with insane madness. A startling and suspenseful thriller."
