THE ADVENTURE OF FAUSTUS BIDGOOD (1986) Presented by Uh Oh Canadia

Uh Oh Canadia Presents a screening of: The Adventure Of Faustus Bidgood (1977-1986). With special live Q and A by actor, writer, and co-director Andy Jones in attendance from Newfoundland.

Plus: special Newfoundland prizes and surprises! With your host Robert Dayton.

Faustus Bidgood is the first feature film produced entirely in Newfoundland with a full Newfoundland cast and crew. Done with "can do" independent spirit, this movie took ten years to complete! It’s a masterpiece. Written, co-directed, and starring Andy Jones of famed Newfoundland comedy group CODCO, with many CODCO members closely involved as part of this ensemble of Newfoundland actors who all deliver great performances. Andy’s brother Michael Jones was the co-director, editor, etc. who made it look visually gorgeous and edited it with impeccable comedic timing.

This movie has commonalities with Flann O'Brien, The Firesign Theatre, John Paizs' Crime Wave, and the films of Guy Maddin. But it really is very, very uniquely Newfoundland and very much its own entity. Entrancing, the absurdity engulfing and making more and more sense as it goes on. This is a movie that crams so much in, so many cracklingly creative comedic ideas -perhaps because they may never get another chance to make a movie- yet every element comes together. It all works and works wondrously. Within these layers, there's deeper themes of church and state at play here: Catholic school trauma and the troubles of Newfoundland joining Canada in 1949. This is a great movie that must be seen.

We are honoured to have Andy Jones (CODCO member; Kids In the Hall writer; actor in Brain Candy, Ken Campbell Roadshow, and many other productions; numerous one-man-shows; books; and so much more) in person as our special guest. Andy Jones will be traveling here across the continent, all the way from Newfoundland. There will be a Q and A as there’ll be so many questions.

“…It takes on the "big" questions and makes them absurdly questionable. Faustus Bidgood is a film made on a dream by dreamers for dreamers. It creates a reality in that dream life and that is what cinema is supposed to do, isn't it? You can expect much more from the New·found- lands of this land. Faustus is Brave New Cinema. It is revolutionary. It is pure. And it is free from dogma as the rest of us go to the dogs.” -Peter Wintonick, Cinema Canada, 1986
